This is an extra newsletter to remind members about Summer Field Trips, the Ohio Valley Seminar in August and the MAOC in October.

Summer Field Trips

Road trip!   Actually, two of them.  The first is almost at hand - a trip to see Russ Vernon's state of the art greenhouses where he grows and sell as New Vision Orchids. The date is Saturday, July 23, 2005.  It will be a day trip to Yorktown, Indiana and back.  Russ grows primarily phalaenopsis although, for the adventurous in the hot Midwest, he also grows odontoglossum hybrids.   Call Larry Sanford at 931-2295 or e-mail him at coolgrow@eos.net if you want to go.

Save August 20 for a day trip to Orchid Inn, Sam Tsui's greenhouses in  Bloomington, Illinois.  Sam specializes in paphs and phrags and sells them in all sizes, from flasks to mature, blooming-size plants.  Call Jan Yates at 475-9771 or e-mail her at jyates11@earthlink.net if you want to go.  This will also be a (long) day trip; bring some music CD's and the drive will seem shorter.

Ohio Valley Seminar

In this month's newsletter is a registration form for the Ohio Valley Seminar.   The Ohio Valley Seminar is rapidly approaching - Saturday, August 13th at the Civic Garden Center.  It's hard to believe but the seminar is now 14 years old.    When it started, a seminar in which local societies would bring in nationally or internationally known speakers (who would also sell plants) was a novelty.   Now it's not but the Ohio Valley Seminar remains a good time and a good value.  This year's speakers are William Goldner, Ph.D. of Woodstream Orchids in Huntingtown, Maryland and Erich Michel of Hoosier Orchids of Indianapolis.  Bill's program will be on Panamanian orchids and Woodstream's web site has an extensive roster of Panamanian species with cultural information, photos as well as separate sections for epidendrums and lycastes.  If you want something more familiar, check out Woodstreams' paphs and phrags.  In the most recent edition of the Awards Quarterly, Woodstream had at least five awarded paphs and phrags so it is another source, possibly not on your radar screen before, for high-quality paphs and phrags.  Bill will have a sales table but if you see a plant on the web site that you can't live without, e-mail him and ask him to bring it to the seminar.

Erich Michel has presented programs before for the society; his company Hoosier Orchids is known internationally for its work propagating orchid species.  Now Hoosier is turning its resources to terrestrials, including the jewel orchids which once graced terrariums before many of us even knew they were orchids.  Hoosier is propagating stunning species with metallic veined leaves and even hybridizing in this group.  Erich and Hoosier will also have a sales table and again, if you see a plant on Hoosier's web site that you want Erich to bring to the seminar for you, e-mail him.

At the lunch break, there will be a brief auction of select plants to benefit the Cincinnati Judging Center.  The seminar is a fun event and a great opportunity to add quality orchids to your collection.  A registration form is included in this month's newsletter.

MAOC Orchidfest

As you all know, GCOS is co-hosting the fall Mid-America Orchid Conference in mid-October  with the Miami Valley society - it will be the largest single show either society has ever had in terms of exhibits, orchid vendors and lecturers.   It is very exciting.  Registration is on the web site with more information about the show hours, speakers and their topics and the special events associated with a Mid-American show.

Although we will be asking for volunteers for specific tasks later this summer, right now we could use some help putting together the 'goody bag' that goes to everyone who registers for the show.   (Registration also includes access to all the programs).   The goody bag includes a seedling plant, a Mid-America pin that Toni Doty designed, and other treats -- it is those other treats that we are assembling in the next couple months.   Traditionally, the items have some relationship to the host city,  Or in this case, cities -
Cincinnati and Dayton.  So, for example, we'd like to include items like samples of Olay or other P&G products, possible samples of Montgomery Inn barbecue sauce, Gold Star or Skyline chili fixin's, discount coupons for Graeter's or other local businesses - you get the idea.   If you work for one of these companies or have an 'in" with someone who might be able to help us acquire tempting  'goody bag' items (free or at cost or in exchange for an ad in the MAOC program brochure), please e-mail  Warren Sipos at csswsg@sbcglobal. net      Warren from the Miami Valley Society is chairing this task; if you cannot reach him, then e-mail Jan Yates at jyates11@earthlink.net

The next meeting of the Greater Cincinnati Orchid Society will be on Tuesday, September 6, 2005.  Note that this is the first Tuesday of the month.  The meeting will be held at the Civic Garden Center on Reading Road across from Bethesda Hospital. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.  There will be time to socialize from 7:00 to 7:30.
