The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.  There will be time to socialize from 7:00 to 7:30.

Program

This month’s program will be by Kristen Mason on “Plieones” with a 7 pm panel on ”Summering Out Your Plants”

Refreshments  by Jim France and Don Luebbering.  There will also be a slide show from the MAOC in MN.

Sid and Terry Camhi of S&T Orchids, Indianapolis, very generously donated 8 raffle plants for our June meeting.   Some of the raffle plants are in bud or in bloom.    The plants are:

Vasco Pine Rivers 'Hawaii,"  Dtps. Betty Wasdon (Regal Velvet x Ralph Wasdon); Lc. Hawaiian Grandeur 'Melody," Odtna. Vesta 'Charm," (two plants); Eplc. Don Herman 'Spots," and Lc. Hwa Yuan Angel 'Little Beauty' (two plants).  Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.

Picnic with MVOS

Our picnic with the Miami Valley Orchid Society is June 26 at Honeysuckle Lodge, Sharon Woods. (see map below)  11:00 A.M. 12:00 Lunch  with the auction starting approximately  at 1.

Everyone brings a covered dish.  Meat and dish supplied by society.  You need a Hamilton County Park sticker.  You can purchase them there for a day $1 or season $5.   We will have some available at our meeting.

Ohio Valley Seminar

In this month's newsletter is a registration form for the Ohio Valley Seminar.   We are very fortunate to have Bill Goldner of Woodstream Orchids, which among other orchids, carries an extensive collection of Panamanian orchids - those will be the subject of his program.   If you have a few extra minutes, check Woodstream's website for a listing of the Panamanian orchids, as well as lycastes, including some of the more diminutive species which are very hard to find.   Woodstream will have a sales table but if you find an orchid that you can't live without; some of our speakers have been willing to accept advance orders and bring them to the seminar.    The other speaker is Erich Michel of Hoosier Orchids, also a specialist in hard to find species.  Erich's topic will be jewel orchids, the small terrrestrials that every collection should include.  Hoosier Orchids is introducing new species and also doing some hybridizing in this group.  Erich and Hoosier will also have a sales table.

At the lunch break, there will be a 30-minute auction of select plants and divisions of AOS awarded orchids to benefit the Cincinnati Judging Center.  This is a great opportunity to add some fine orchids to your existing collection.

MAOC Orchidfest

As you all know, GCOS is co-hosting the fall Mid-America Orchid Conference in mid-October  with the Miami Valley society - it will be the largest single show either society has ever had in terms of exhibits, orchid vendors and lecturers.   It is very exciting.  Registration is on the web site with more information about the show hours, speakers and their topics and the special events associated with a Mid-American show.

Although we will be asking for volunteers for specific tasks later this summer, right now we could use some help putting together the 'goody bag' that goes to everyone who registers for the show.   (Registration also includes access to all the programs).   The goody bag includes a seedling plant, a Mid-America pin that Toni Doty designed, and other treats -- it is those other treats that we are assembling in the next couple months.   Traditionally, the items have some relationship to the host city,  Or in this case, cities -
Cincinnati and Dayton.  So, for example, we'd like to include items like samples of Olay or other P&G products, possible samples of Montgomery Inn barbecue sauce, Gold Star or Skyline chili fixin's, discount coupons for Graeter's or other local businesses - you get the idea.   If you work for one of these companies or have an 'in" with someone who might be able to help us acquire tempting  'goody bag' items (free or at cost or in exchange for an ad in the MAOC program brochure), please e-mail  Warren Sipos at csswsg@sbcglobal. net      Warren from the Miami Valley Society is chairing this task; if you cannot reach him, then e-mail Jan Yates at jyates11@earthlink.net

Summer Field Trips

Larry Sanford is in charge of a field trip to New Vision Orchids owned by Russ Vernon in Yorktown, Indiana.    The date is July 23, 2005  It will be a day trip.   Contact Larry at 931-2295 or coolgrow@eos.net for more information.

A second trip is being planned -- an overnight trip, probably Saturday/Sunday to Orchid Inn, in Illinois, owned by Sam Tsui, and Windy Hill Orchids, near St. Louis, owned by Marilyn LeDoux.   Both are exceptional paph and phrag growers and breeders and Marilyn carries some bulbophyllums and other unique genera as well.   The dates are still to be determined but if you would like to be kept informed, give your e-mail address or telephone number to Jan Yates, jyates11@earthlink.net

The Kentucky Orchid Society - Louisville

The Kentucky Orchid Society in Louisville always hosts a show that is very competitive in terms of exhibit and plant quality.  This year was no different - 14 plants received AOS awards of quality or culture.   An extraordinary Paph. Armeni-White, owned by Sam Tsui of Orchid Inn, received a 92 point FCC (First Class Certificate), the highest quality award given within the American Orchid Society.

The GCOS exhibit which started out as 25 square feet then expanded to about 35 square feet to accommodate some very nice, large plants won the AOS Show Trophy as well as a blue ribbon in its class and the trophy ribbon for society exhibits.    It was created by Larry Sanford, Steve Helbling, Jan Yates and Alexa Noel.   Larry Sanford's white specimen size Miltoniopsis Lady Snow 'Hanashobu'  AM/AOS was the focal point of the exhibit; it won two class trophies (miltoniopsis and specimen).   His red Oda. Leysa received an 84 point Award of Merit; he gave it the clonal name 'Mary G.'

Plants in the exhibit and their owners were:
