The next meeting of the Greater Cincinnati Orchid Society will be on Tuesday, November 1, 2005.  Note that this is the first Tuesday of the month.  The meeting will be held at the Civic Garden Center on Reading Road across from Bethesda Hospital. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.  There will be time to socialize from 7:00 to 7:30.

Program

This month’s program will be by Steve Benjamin on “Mini and Compact Cattleyas”.  Refreshments by Steve Helbling and Pat June.  Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.  Raffle plant will be from the MAOC -Den. (Burana white x Thanaid Stripes) ‘Hawaii’.

MAOC Orchidfest

When visitors to ‘Orchidfest’ started using their cell phones to call friends because “you wouldn’t believe how big the show is!” and the vendors had “cool stuff, ” we knew the show was a success.

Attendance was steady throughout both rainy Saturday and Sunday and visitors left carrying lots of orchids to new homes.  By most accounts, the display of red phrags by Chris Purver, Curator of the Eric Young Foundation, was the traffic stopper.  Most were Phrag. Jason Fischer, their quality so high that two plants received FCC’s during AOS judging, of 97 and 93 points respectively, as well as the Frank Gastright Cypripedium Alliance Trophy and the MAOC Class Trophy.  A 97 point FCC is unheard of!   (The flowers were extraordinary.  All the more remarkable because the phrags were cut flowers which traveled across the Atlantic Ocean in a box!)  In all, 9 orchids in the show received a total of 12 AOS awards.

The AOS Show Trophy went to the display from Hoosier Orchids and the Orchid Digest Show Trophy went to the Central Kentucky Orchid Society.  Photographs of the winning exhibits, the AOS awarded plants and class winners will be on the society’s web page with highlights in the next newsletter.

Since Orchidfest was held in conjunction with the Mid America Orchid Congress, there were speakers Saturday afternoon for Congress registrants and a business meeting Sunday.  Highlights from the business meeting will be posted on the MAOC web site, including updates on conservation efforts and education that the MAOC  is funding.

As a special feature of ‘Orchidfest,’ beginners lessons were offered twice Sunday afternoon, both sessions taught by Elaine Better, who brought some of her plants (thanks Stan)  and some tips on ‘how not to grow orchids.’  Combined attendance was nearly 40 people, many of whom also picked up information on joining either the Greater Cincinnati or Miami Valley Orchid Societies.  The societies’ information table was very busy offering handouts on both societies, cultural information from the American Orchid Society, and information about joining the AOS and subscribing to Orchid Digest.

Thank You

Everyone deserves congratulations for outstanding effort and skills in putting on an outstanding MAOC!!!!

From venue choice and meals, to exhibits, to logo, to booklet, to vendor selections,  to email registration, to the layouts, to the greeters, to the riderboard, to setup and teardown, to hospitality, to unloaders and loaders, to judging and clerking, to beginners lessons, to 12 awards to nine awarded plants, to speakers (Wilma was fortuitous !), to the banquet music and flowers and much more importantly, to the spirit of thoughtful cooperation and friendliness demonstrated by everyone involved.

We can be pleased that it was one of the best MAOC in recent times. Again Congratulations!   Serious Congratulations !!!

            Thank you! Thank you!!!

            Larry Sanford, Barry Rhinehart

If you attended ‘Orchidfest,’ as a registrant you already know that the ‘goody bag’ was stuffed with interesting items, including a Catasetinae alliance seedling from both GCOS and MVOS.   Thanks to the following individuals and companies who graciously donated other items:  Krohn Conservatory, Cincinnati Visitors Bureau, Dayton Visitors Bureau, Kings Island Amusement Park, Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, U.S. Air Force Museum, National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Carillon Historical Park, Cox Arboretum & Gardens Metropark, Worms Way, Procter & Gamble, Oak Knob Orchids & Soaps, Esther Price Fine Chocolates, Dr. Caroline Miller, Associate Vice-President, Enrollment Management, University of Cincinnati, Staples, Glier’s Goetta, Fox Farm Soil & Fertilizer Co., Crystal Co., Warren & Carolyn Sipos, Iron’s Fruit Market, and Lora Thompson, Hair Etc.

Both societies would also like to thank the following individuals and companies who donated items to the MAOC auction:  Wildcatt Database Co., Trader Joe’s, Jo Boudinot, Paul  Groneck, Fox Farm Soil & Fertilizer Co. as well as society members and vendors who contributed items Saturday afternoon for auctioning later that evening.

Kudos also go to Furst Florist which designed orchid arrangements for the show, some of which were in the lobby at the Kings Island Resort, in hospitality and on the banquet tables Saturday night, each arrangement on  a pedestal.  (The orchid arrangements were highly sought after - after the meal was over, the arrangements were sold to some happy buyers.)   Furst Florist prepared the flowers at virtually no charge and donated the riser rental, a very generous contribution.   Thanks also to Orchids by Hausermann which donated almost all the orchids for the arrangements and which has been a strong support of the Mid America Orchid Congress and to Jim France, a member of both GCOS and MVOS, who arranged this.
