MAOC Orchidfest

As you all know, GCOS is co-hosting the fall Mid-America Orchid Conference in mid-October  with the Miami Valley society - it will be the largest single show either society has ever had in terms of exhibits, orchid vendors and lecturers.   It is very exciting.  Registration is on the web site with more information about the show hours, speakers and their topics and the special events associated with a Mid-American show.
Although we will be asking for volunteers for specific tasks later this summer, right now we could use some help putting together the 'goody bag' that goes to everyone who registers for the show.   (Registration also includes access to all the programs).   The goody bag includes a seedling plant, a Mid-America pin that Toni Doty designed, and other treats -- it is those other treats that we are assembling in the next couple months.   Traditionally, the items have some relationship to the host city,  Or in this case, cities -
Cincinnati and Dayton.  So, for example, we'd like to include items like samples of Olay or other P&G products, possible samples of Montgomery Inn barbecue sauce, Gold Star or Skyline chili fixin's, discount coupons for Graeter's or other local businesses - you get the idea.   If you work for one of these companies or have an 'in" with someone who might be able to help us acquire tempting  'goody bag' items (free or at cost or in exchange for an ad in the MAOC program brochure), please e-mail  Warren Sipos at csswsg@sbcglobal. net      Warren from the Miami Valley Society is chairing this task; if you cannot reach him, then e-mail Jan Yates at jyates11@earthlink.net

MAOC Volunteers Needed

We will need volunteers to help with our hosting of the Mid America Orchid Congress.  Some possibilities include helping with congress registration, hospitality area, auction, set up, tear down, greeters, run AV equipment, plant registration, plant sitting, assembling goodie bag, and clerks for judging.  We are sure there will be more.  We will have sign up sheets and the next two meetings.

Last month, on July 23rd, two vans of orchid society members visited New Vision Orchids in Yorktown, Indiana, northeast of Indianapolis.   It was about a three hour drive.  New Vision Orchids is owned by Russ Vernon who long-time society members know as a premier grower and hybridizer of phalaenopsis and oncidinae and for his illuminating programs on how to grow (or not grow) orchids.  As you can tell from the photos, Russ now has commercial-sized greenhouses, two of them in fact - a cool house for his oncidium and odontoglossum hybrids and an intermediate-warm house for his phals, vandas and everything else.  While Russ has sales tables at our show, his greenhouses are not generally open to the public at this time.  One of the nice things about the field trip was a chance to talk to Russ, see his entire inventory and for some, get dibs on divisions of select plants when he divies them at a later time.  Plus he fed us soda and cookies before we left.  Orchid shopping is hard work.

The trip to Sam Tsui's greenhouses has been postponed but will be rescheduled.  For all the paph & phrag lovers, though, Sam is a vendor at the Mid-America Orchid Congress scheduled for October 22-23rd at the King's Island Resort and Conference Center.   Paul Philips of Ratcliffe Orchids will also be there with paphs and phrags from the Eric Young Foundation to go along with featured speaker Chris Purver, new horticultural director of the EYF.  Pictures from Russ Vernon and the Indiana State Fair are at the end of the newsletter

Plant Judging

AOS Judging of plants is done at the shows listed below under Nearby Shows as well as at the regularly scheduled judging sessions listed immediately below.  These sessions begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Civic Garden Center.  You are welcome to bring a plant to be judged or just to observe the judging.  Be a little early; plant registration is from Noon to 1:00 p.m.
