Orchidfest - Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 5, 6 and 7

Over the summer, Stan Better built a novel exhibit for our society to display at the Mid-America Orchid Congress -- an open greenhouse with arched roof from which plant can be placed on benches, hung from the roof and placed inside and out.   It has space for a lot of orchids - big plants (of which we didn't have a lot.  But it was an exciting departure from our usual exhibit and it showed well in the space at Kings Island.  Here are my apologies in advance for any plants not mentionned below which received ribbons.   And thank everyone who helped Stan Better, Vickie Neubauer and Dan and  Ann Tsui with setting up the exhibit or who provided plants.  Any plants not mentioned here will be covered in next month's newsletter or listed on the web site.   The exhibit took second place, behind the Miami Valley Orchid Society, which won the AOS Show Trophy - kudos to both societies actually.  I have been to a number of MAOC's in the last couple years and our respective exhibits set a high bar for quality.

Kentucky Orchid Society Show

The Kentucky Orchid Society Show was held two weeks ago in Louisville, barely enough time to catch our breath after the MAOC but Steve Helbling's driftwood made a road trip and helped the society exhibit garner the AOS Show Trophy.  The exhibit was set up by Larry Sanford, Steve Helbling, Alexa Noel and Jan Yates and, apart from pinching a few fingers getting the backdrops set up, all went well.    When the exhibit was mostly finished, Steve and I decided that the right side of the exhibit was a little light on plants so we went shopping at the sales table: I bought a phal which I entered in the white with markings category (and it placed second).    The ribbon-winning plants are listed below:

Larry Sanford        S. coccinea                                                                Blue, Class Trophy

Brsdm. Nittany Gold 'Patience' HCC/AOS          Red

                                    Cyr. macranthum                                                 Red

                                    Onc. Highland 'Jesse' HCC/AOS                       Blue

                                    Wils. Petite Jean                                                Red

Odm. Q'uistrum 'Lyoth Angel' AM/AOS             Blue

                                    Oda. Baross Valley                                            White

                                    Masd. John Swind                                              Red

Steve Helbling        Lc. Paul Groneck                                                    Blue, Class Trophy

                                      Paph. adductum                                               Blue

Paph.Yellow Tiger        Blue, Class Trophy and awarded an  AM/AOS

Paph. Hsinying Light Year x Dark Force            Blue

Phrag Ouaisne                Blue, Class Trophy and the President's Trophy (given by

the KOS president to the plant he or she considers Best in Show)

                                    Phrag. Jason Fischer                                         Blue

                                    Phrag. Red Lightning                                         Blue

Dtps. Sogo Domei        White, plus awarded an HCC/AOS

                                    Pecteilis hawkesiana                                          Red

                                    Sngl. longifolia                                                    Red

Jan Yates                Dtps. Desert Heat x Newberry Parfait                    Red

Rick and Alexa Noel        Cyc. herrenhusanum                                    Blue, Class Trophy

                                        Christieara vietnamica                                  Blue, Class Trophy

As you can tell from the list, two of Steve's plants received AOS quality awards; the salmon-colored Phrag. Ouaisne was the focal plant in the exhibit.   One other plant of note which was in Russ Vernon's New Vision Orchids exhibit was the largest Habenaria medusae which I have seen.   Multiple flower spikes and it received a much-deserved AOS cultural award.
