The next meeting of the Greater Cincinnati Orchid Society will be on Tuesday, November 3, 2009.  Note that this is usually the first Tuesday of the month.  The meeting will be held at the Civic Garden Center on Reading Road across from Bethesda Hospital. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.  There will be time to socialize from 7:00 to 7:30.

Program

November’s program is by Jordan Hawley. Refreshments are by Dan and Ann Tsui and Margaret Cullen.

2010 Membership

It is time to renew your GCOS membership.  We have maintained our dues at the same rate as last year.  A single membership is $18 and a family membership is $25.  We have added a new student membership category with options for reduced dues when combined with volunteer hours (such as helping at shows or potting bees).  If you know any young people or students who may be interested in this opportunity, please pass it on.  Membership form at the end of newsletter.

Orchid Conservation Coalition

We will be voting on which conservation group to support at the November meeting.

Treasurer’s Message    2010 Budget

We will be asking the membership to approve our 2010 budget at the November meeting.  We presented a preliminary budget for discussion at the October meeting and, based on the comments of members at that meeting, the board re-evaluated the budget and made adjustments.

  • The proposed budget is “balanced” and it projects no diminishment in our core programs such as speakers for the regular meetings, the summer seminar and shows.
  • We removed the board’s contingency fund and we agree to come back to the members if it appears we will slip into a deficit position.
  • We cut back on non-core programs such as our winter dinner meeting.
  • We reduced the proposed increase to our annual AOS donation back to our existing historical level.  We hope and anticipate that the membership will authorize an increased donation later in the year.
  • We did not increase membership dues, program fees, or the fees for vendors participating in our biannual shows.
  • We remained conservative in estimating our revenues for 2010.  All budget adjustments were made to expense items.  We anticipate, but we didn’t attempt to predict, that our new status as a 501(c)(3) organization will augment the society’s revenues in 2010.

We listened.  The board respectfully requests that the membership approve the budget as presented.
